SCT Examinations Now Regulated by Ofqual

In a significant development for Comhaltas’ education programme, the Scrúdú Ceol Tíre examination system is now regulated by Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) in England. The addition of SCT’s eleven grades to Ofqual’s register of qualifications has been facilitated by Comhaltas project partner Music Teachers’ Board (MTB).

The Comhaltas / Music Teachers’ Board accreditation and technology partnership was officially launched during February 2024 at the Music & Drama Education Expo in London. The partnership will provide a platform for continued overseas growth for Scrúdú Ceol Tíre, allowing candidates a new option to submit online recorded exams, to be launched later in 2024. While retaining a primary focus on offering live face-to-face examinations across Comhaltas’ extensive exam centre network, the additional online recorded examination option will maximise accessibility to our qualifications, making them available to candidates of any age, in any location worldwide.

The Music Teachers’ Board are an Ofqual regulated awarding body, offering qualifications in both practical and performance grades. Launched in 2019, MTB now has over 2,000 exam centres across 50 different countries.

Accreditation by Ofqual provides a mark of quality, providing recognition that MTB / Comhaltas are in adherence to Ofqual rules and requirements, combining expertise in assessment with effective operational delivery. In turn, this provides assurance that the learners who take MTB Comhaltas Ofqual regulated qualifications have the required level of knowledge and skills in the relevant subject area.

MTB Comhaltas Grades 6-8 are now eligible for the following *UCAS Tariff points.

*UCAS Tariff points translate qualifications and grades into a numerical value. This numerical value is used by Higher Education course providers in the UK as part of satisfying entry requirements for a particular course.
